Why are we supporting Parkinson’s Research?

Belinda’s Story

I still remember the day my Dad sat me down in my bedroom to tell me that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s. I was 16 and to be honest had never heard of it and had no idea what it was.

My father was in his early 50’s when diagnosed and has now been living with it for over 25 years… and my father is one of the lucky ones. Lucky because he is still alive. Some of the people diagnosed with Parkinson’s at the same time as my father, only lived 10 years from their diagnosis. 10 years!

Now although he is still with us, he has battled this disease every single day.

Currently there is no known cause for this debilitating disease and treatments only address symptoms, not disease progression.

As with most disease’s today it effects not only the person with the illness but the whole family, especially the primary carer or carer’s.

Parkinson’s

Parkinson’s is a debilitating disease with over 100,000 people living with it in Australia today and the prevalence of Parkinson’s is higher than prostate, breast, colorectal and lung cancers combined. One person every 40 minutes is diagnosed with Parkinson’s in Australia.

Shake It Up Foundation

There are plenty of charities out there for Parkinson’s Disease but I was really drawn to the ‘Shake it up” Australia Foundation. Not only are they a not-for-profit charity, which means 100% of their donations go directly to research but they also look at not just pharmacological solutions but at lifestyle options to help those living with Parkinson’s too.

As April is Parkinson’s awareness month, please join with us to help raise money for this charity and help find a cure for this disease.

Portraits for Parkinson’s

All of these reasons are why we are spending April raising not only money, but also awareness for Parkinson’s.

We would love your support in our Portraits for Parkinson’s Project to be able to fundraise for much needed research and treatments to be developed in Australia to help patients and their families, living with this diagnosis everyday.
